Limited-edition Idris Khan protective face mask
This sustainably produced limited-edition face mask and case have been designed in partnership with artist Idris Khan for the inaugural edition of the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship. The fellowship aims to address racial disparities in the visual arts sector by providing a UK-based emerging Black or POC curator with a 12-18 month paid placement at Chisenhale Gallery, London.
The artwork on the signed face mask and case was created by Khan during the COVID-19 lockdown using layers of blue watercoloured sheet music from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and is titled Time Past, Time Present (2020). Inspired by the vivid colours of nature changing intensely, Khan attempts to capture the passing of time through colour and musical marks.
Each face mask also comes with a custom designed matching case to keep it safe and both are made from sustainably sourced cotton and linen produced with as minimal environmental impact as possible.
Help support diversity in the arts by purchasing a face mask. 100% of sales proceeds benefit the fellowship.
Please allow up to 14 working days after placing your order for this face mask to be shipped. Please also ensure that you are using an up to date web browser before placing your order.

The Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship is a new programme that helps UK-based emerging Black or POC curators to develop their practice within a renowned public institution through paid placements. The initiative is a collaborative project, bringing together artists and organisations across the non-profit and private sector to increase accessibility, representation and social mobility within the arts.
The inaugural 2020 fellowship will be realised in partnership with Chisenhale Gallery, who have a well-established track record of providing high-quality training and professional development to emerging curators. The fellow will be based at the gallery and gain significant experience across a range of different areas pertaining to Chisenhale Gallery’s ongoing exhibitions and education programme. Upon completing the fellowship, the fellow will have access to additional mentoring sessions with members of the senior Frieze team.
The fellowship will be supported by proceeds from the sale of a protective face mask designed by celebrated British artist Idris Khan. A fund has been set to support the annual fellowship and cover the fellow’s salary, travel, research and professional development.
Chisenhale Gallery is a non-profit organisation that is committed to supporting artists and enabling them to realise their most exciting and inspired visions. Should you wish to support Chisenhale Gallery without purchasing a mask, you can make a donation on their website, here.
All proceeds from sales of the face masks and editions (excluding shipping and taxes) and any donations made up to a total of £45,000 will be donated to Chisenhale Gallery Limited, a registered charity (number 1026175). Any proceeds and donations collected thereafter will go towards the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship.
